Should I avoid cliche's like the plague.?

Yes and no. Avoid using the same old ones over and over and never doing anything new to them. Use cliches and make them your own. Make your own twist on things. Make normal cliches, not so cliched anymore. And don't go overboard with cliches. Don't make everything a cliche.
