How can people torture animals?

Lately upon looking around the internet I saw some disturbing photos. I saw photos of mutilated tortured cats and even a video of a girl throwing puppies into a river. I don't understand how people can do such things to animals. It's one thing to kill some bugs, but a whole nother thing to torture dogs and cats. What leads people to do this?
